Jim GORING. Jim brings to the firm a commitment to excellence in design, and a deep joy in working with people. He is particularly adept at working with complex public and cultural user groups typical of the projects he directs. Jim's infectious energy and openness are evident in his work with involved stakeholders, and he enjoys finding the kernel of value in challenging circumstances that can give a public project direction and legs.
Jim developed a profound respect for the land as an associate at the late William Turnbull’s office in San Francisco. That respect includes a commitment to sustainable design principles, beginning with common sense and extending to the use of materials and energy technologies that can help our buildings live more lightly on the earth. Jim's commitment to excellence has been recognized by numerous design awards.

Douglas THORNLEY, PRINCIPAL
Douglas’s commitment to design excellence extends throughout his practice. He is equally adept sketching design solutions in the studio and discussing the best way to approach a construction detail with a veteran craftsman. This deep understanding of all aspects of design and construction makes him a valuable designer, leader and teacher.
Whether working with clients or jointly leading the Berkeley or Sonoma studios, Douglas is a “hands-on” collaborator. Clients say that he transforms their ideas and aspirations into built form – combining creativity in exploring design options with an understanding of how they must respond to the uniqueness of context. Giacomo has been part of the Goring&Straja team since 1999, and became a partner in 2008.
In 2011 Giacomo founded O.I.L., a parallel universe of Goring&Straja Studio Milano, with the idea of exploring the transversality of different disciplines related to design and image.
