SAINT MATTHEW LUTHERAN CHURCH
Walnut Creek, CA
Project Description
This project included a teen center, classrooms for children and adult education, an administrative wing, and support spaces.
The Saint Matthew Lutheran Church project was originally submitted to the city by the church with a much different design by another architect. In response to criticism from their neighbors and the Design Review Commissioners, Saint Matthew decided to abandon that design and begin again. They asked three architects to submit preliminary concepts and hired Goring & Straja Architects to design the project.
Saint Matthew is located in a busy, mixed neighborhood and many homes in the neighborhood are well-maintained Eichler homes. The concept for this project was to make the new facilities residential in scale and to use the Eichler homes as a design starting point. The unique worship center stands on its own, while the new construction blends seamlessly with the surrounding the neighborhood.
