CUVAISON BOATHOUSES

CUVAISON BOATHOUSES

The leadership at Cuvaison Winery approached us to create an intimate wine tasting experience that would showcase the natural beauty of the property near their man-made irrigation pond. Unlike typical winery reservoirs, this pond is surrounded by native plants, creating a waterside environment that attracts several species of waterfowl and migratory birds. Early on, it was decided that placing a tasting pavilion near this unique, natural setting would offer guests a deeper appreciation for the winery’s stewardship of the land, beyond just its vineyards. The goal was to design a space that was easily accessible and where guests can enjoy their wine while fully immersing themselves in the serene surroundings.

To ensure minimum impact to this bucolic location, the design emphasizes health and well-being by providing the ultimate “indoor-outdoor” experience. The tasting pavilions and back-bar support structure are carefully positioned near the water’s edge, nestled among existing oak trees. A boardwalk connects the structures, sloping gently down towards the water while offering guests a dynamic walking experience that immerses them in the shifting landscape, enhancing their connection to the natural surroundings. The open air experience is enhanced by the ability to see and hear the native waterfowl flying nearby, releasing guests from the stresses of everyday life. To reduce the impact to the land, the pavilions are cantilevered over the water, literally floating above the pond.
