JESUIT SCHOOL OF THEOLOGY
The Jesuit School of Theology at Berkeley, now part of Santa Clara University, retained our services to complete a master plan that would address the need for improved facilities able to accommodate an increasing number of students. This complex commission involved combining two aging facilities, a retired fraternity house and an apartment building into one harmonious structure and merging the two parcels. We developed a scheme that provided a new chapel that opens to a plaza suitable for outdoor services. Together, the chapel and forecourt serve as the public face of the JSTB. The chapel is both a teaching facility and a functioning place of worship.
The project scope included an addition, seismic improvements, a new accessible elevator and restrooms, plus mechanical and electrical system upgrades and interior renovations. Approval by the local design review and zoning boards were successfully granted. Construction was completed in time for the Fall 2006 semester.
